About

Audubon Canyon Ranch is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit environmental conservation and education organization. It was founded in 1962 to save a major heronry and block commercial development of Bolinas Lagoon in western Marin County, leading the way for the protection of Tomales Bay to the north, which now forms the eastern boundary of Point Reyes National Seashore. Today, Audubon Canyon Ranch acts as guardian of a system of nature preserves spanning 26 properties in Marin, Sonoma and Lake counties. Our four main nature preserves in Marin and Sonoma counties provide significant habitat to wildlife and have been placed in our care by generous donors to steward and protect in perpetuity. We have a staff of 34 and more than 400 volunteers. ACR’s conservation science program has monitored the nesting successes of herons and egrets for over 40 years, conducted shorebird and water bird surveys on Tomales Bay for over 30 years, and is currently using GPS to track the movements of individual Great Egrets and Long-billed Curlews on the coast and mountain lions in the Sonoma Valley. Our Education Program, which turned 50 in 2020, has brought hands-on nature education to 260,000 children around the Bay Area. Our Fire Forward program, founded in 2017, is changing the way our community uses “good fire.” And we preserve the literary legacy of M.F.K. Fisher at her Last House at Bouverie Preserve.
