Join Permit Sonoma
Working in the office and out in the field, Permit Sonoma's Engineering Aide positions learn to perform work related to plan check and the inspection of private construction improvements. They learn to monitor non-standard septic systems; and how to inspect drainage improvements, grading, cut-fills, sanitation and water connections, curb-gutter-sidewalks, and driveways for code and plan compliance. Along with assisting with conducting plan reviews and learning to issue correction notices, they also keep written and electronic notes regarding actions of inspections and site reviews. Successful candidates for the position will possess:
- The ability to learn to issue permits and inspect a project's compliance with plans and specifications
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and prioritize daily activities
- Excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with applicants, industry representatives, staff, and other agencies
- Training and/or experience using drafting software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, etc.
EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT
Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.
This recruitment is being conducted to fill a temporary, extra-help Engineering Aide position in Permit Sonoma. This employment list may also be used to fill future extra-help positions as they occur during the active status of this list. *Salary is negotiable within the established range.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Any combination of experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, academic course work in plane geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and surveying would provide such opportunity. Post high school education in engineering technology, including computer aided drafting and design would be desirable.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to: trace simple maps and plans; make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately; learn to operate a wide variety of computer applications; gather data and prepare accurate reports; read and understand technical descriptions; understand and follow oral and written directions; work cooperatively with other staff; climb, stand and walk for sustained periods of time, perform physical tasks such as chopping, digging, flagging, and traffic control, and lift moderately heavy objects; utilize electronic information systems and analyze and interpret such information; communicate effectively with coworkers and the public.
