Senior Parks and Grounds Maintenance Worker

As a Senior Parks and Grounds Maintenance Worker, you will lead Parks and Grounds Maintenance Worker I/IIs in projects and preventative/routine park maintenance, identify project and preventative/routine maintenance needs, work directly with the supervisor to prioritize projects, and:
- Assist the supervisor with scheduling, coaching, and leading staff
- Make decisions in the field, problem-solve staffing issues, and provide on-going updates to the supervisor
- Track work orders for completion, following up with staff and the supervisor
- Complete projects with deadlines, updating the supervisor of any changes
- Create and assign work orders in MaintainX, the department’s maintenance management system
Successful candidates will have experience leading construction projects and/or maintenance programs, and possess the ability to:
- Communicate effectively and timely in both written and oral form
- Listen effectively to understand others’ points of view
- Respond to written, phone, and electronic inquiries in a timely manner
- Plan, organize, and prioritize work within set deadlines
- Complete tasks with minimal supervision and guidance
- Research resources for answers
- Train staff in preventative maintenance, pre-trip inspections, troubleshooting, and routine repairs
- Work effectively with computer systems for the purpose of writing reports, entering data, and tracking information
It is also highly desirable that candidates have one or more of the following certifications:
- Arborist certificate
- Certified Pool Operator
- General Contractor’s License/Certificate
- Landscape Contractor’s License/Certificate
- Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate
- Playground Safety Inspector

This recruitment is being conducted to fill a Senior Parks and Grounds Maintenance Worker position in the Regional Parks Department. The employment list established from this recruitment may also fill other full-time, part-time, and extra-help regular or bilingual positions that may occur during the active status of the employment list. Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience which would likely provide for possession of the knowledge and abilities herein. Normally, this would include three years of experience in semi-skilled and skilled building construction, repair, maintenance, or groundskeeping work.
License: Possession of a valid driver’s license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
A valid State of California Class A Commercial Driver’s License, including valid and appropriate California Endorsements is desirable.
Special/Additional Requirements: Possession of a Water Treatment Operator (T1) certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board is required within the probationary period.
Desirable Certifications: Depending upon assignment, possession of one or more of the additional licenses and/or certificates is desirable: An Arborist certificate; a general contractor’s license; a Pesticide Applicator’s license; a Playground Safety Inspector certificate; a Pool Operator certificate; and/or other comparable certificates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of: methods, materials, and equipment used in building and parks maintenance and unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled construction work, including carpentry, welding, masonry, plumbing, and electrical systems; landscape and grounds maintenance practices and procedures; techniques related to the care of lawns, plants, shrubs, and trees; propagation, planting, cultivation, pruning, and fertilization; the operation, maintenance, and safety requirements of machinery and equipment; safety procedures associated with unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance work.
Working knowledge of: ADA requirements for building and construction projects; sprays, pesticides, and the proper means of controlling insects, parasites, and plant diseases; the principles of leading, training, and motivating staff; maintenance and operation of water and septic/sewer systems in parks; hazmat and proper disposal of raw sewage.
Ability to: lead and oversee the work of parks and maintenance personnel performing unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled work; perform a variety of light and heavy unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled parks and building construction, repair, and maintenance tasks; perform landscaping work to include the propagation, transplanting, cultivation, pruning, grafting, trimming, spraying, and fertilization of lawns, plants, shrubs, and trees; plan, install, and maintain a variety of hydraulic and electric sprinkler and drip-irrigation systems; drive, operate, haul, and/or adjust a variety of equipment, such as trucks, trailers, fork lifts, tractors, rollers, trenchers, water tenders, riding power mowers, power edgers, blowers, aerators, renovators, chain saws, wood chippers, power sprayers, skip loaders, excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, and related equipment; apply appropriate techniques related to using, maintaining, and repairing power tools; make, interpret, and work from technical sketches, blueprints, circuit diagrams and plans; estimate costs, labor, time, and materials and keep accurate records; set priorities to comply with departmental work management systems; effectively answer questions from the general public; work independently and as a member of a crew; establish and maintain effective working relationships; problem solve and make sound decisions; follow oral and written instructions; prepare and present oral and written reports; read and write in English; perform arithmetic calculations; use electronic equipment to communicate.
