Join the Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water) as a Water Agency Chemist.Starting salary up to $60.03/hour ($125,289/year) plus a cash allowance of approximately $600/month*
The Water Agency Chemist is responsible for conducting water and wastewater analyses on raw, partially treated, and treated water and wastewater samples to determine the effectiveness of plant processes and ensure wastewater discharge and potable water deliveries meet mandated requirements. Additional responsibilities include:- Sampling rivers, streams, lakes, wells, reservoirs, and various open and closed concrete or steel tanks
- Operating, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory equipment
- Collaborating with local, regional, state, and federal water and wastewater regulatory agencies
- Analyzing, evaluating, and recording test results
- Preparing reports and maintaining laboratory certifications
- Organizing and coordinating all laboratory activities
- Significant experience working in a wastewater treatment facility and/or an environmental laboratory
- Experience performing analytical record keeping
- Thorough understanding and experience maintaining laboratory certifications with the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program
- The ability to work independently and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
- A California Water Treatment Plant Operator Grade T2 Certificate and a Laboratory Analyst/Water Quality Analyst Grade II certification from the California Water Environment Association or the California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association
- A California Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 certificate or above

Sonoma Water is a special district formed by the California State Legislature in 1949 and is responsible for providing a safe and reliable water supply to its customers in Sonoma and Marin counties. Sonoma Water also maintains 75 miles of flood control channels and provides sanitation services. Employing approximately 230 employees, Sonoma Water consists of five divisions including Engineering and Resource Planning, Environmental Resources and Public Affairs, Water/Wastewater Operations, Maintenance, and Administrative Services. Education: Any combination of education and training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, graduation from a four year college or university with major course work in chemistry, bacteriology, chemical engineering, sanitary engineering or a closely related field would provide such opportunity.
Experience: Any combination of experience which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, one year of experience performing chemical and bacteriological analyses and tests, preferably in a water or wastewater treatment plant, would provide such opportunity.
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required.
